Bio:
Mrs. Fawell practices in the area of food and agriculture law with specific focus on the regulation of foods, dietary supplements, and consumer products, as well as advertising and promotion issues. She represents clients regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, Department of Agriculture, Federal Trade Commission, Consumer Product Safety Commission, and other health and safety regulatory agencies at both the federal and state levels.
Prior to joining Hogan & Hartson, Elizabeth was a legislative assistant with the Office of Congresswoman Anne M. Northup. Previously, she was an English teacher with Foshan Yi Zhong Xue.

What should your Food Safety Plan look like?

Dr. Clifford J. Pappas, Senior Advisor - HACCP and Quality System Education, AIB International
Bio:
Dr. Pappas graduated from Kansas State University in 1972 with a Doctorate in Food Science. His focus was in the area of human and animal nutrition. His continuing education pursuits include certified courses in business management, application of statistical techniques, total quality management, auditing quality systems, and motivational and teaching techniques.
Today, Dr. Pappas teaches quality programs at food companies throughout the world. This training is primarily focused on helping workers understand the principals of HACCP, Good Manufacturing Practices, Sanitation, and Quality Systems. Attendees at these training sessions include company owners, middle management, and line operators.
Cliff has over 40 years experience in the food industry, including working as a private consultant for small, entrepreneur, growth companies. He is a member of ASQC and IFT.
He currently serves as Senior Advisor – HACCP and Quality System Education at AIB International, a global food safety inspection, auditing, certification, training and consulting firm based out of Manhattan, Kansas.

Gary J, Kushner, Partner, Hogan Lovells US LLP
Bio:
Mr. Kushner has been a food industry lawyer for more than 30 years and has been AFFI’s general counsel for much of that time. He represents trade associations and corporations before government agencies, Congressional committees, and the courts in a variety of matters. Gary has particular experience with the development, interpretation, and enforcement of laws and regulations governing food production, processing, and distribution throughout the United States and internationally. Besides AFFI, he also serves as general counsel to a number of other national associations.

Imported Foods: Challenges and Opportunities

Tom Chestnut, Vice President, Food Safety & Quality, NSF International
Bio:
Tom started with NSF International in 2006 and is now responsible for all food safety programs in North and South America, including processor food safety and the global certification programs with SQF, BRC, FSSC 22000 and GlobalGAP. As the leading global certifier under GFSI benchmarked programs (over 28,000 farms and facilities audited in 2010), NSF has actively engaged in both face-to-face discussions with the FDA and comments to the docket regarding implementation of the food safety modernization act.
Tom came to NSF from Darden Restaurants where he was Vice President, Total Quality, responsible for all aspects of supplier, laboratory, and restaurant quality assurance. He is active in the Conference for Food Protection where he was Vice-Chair of the 2000 Conference and served as a member of the Executive Board from 1998-2004. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Health from Illinois State University, with graduate studies in Administration and Management at the University of Illinois.

Tim Jackson, Director of Food Safety, Nestle North America
Bio:
Tim Jackson is currently the Director of Food Safety for Nestlé US and Nestle Canada, with responsibility for thermal processing and food safety programs in hygiene, microbiology, allergens and chemical contaminants. He has worked for Nestlé as a research and industrial microbiologist since 1995: as a research associate, as head of the microbiology department of Nestlé’s reference laboratory for the US and Canada and, from 2004 to 2008, as Microbiology Advisor to Corporate Quality Management for Nestlé world-wide.
Tim received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Abilene Christian University and his Master of Science and Ph.D. in Food Microbiology from Texas A&M University.
