Education Sessions

Keynote Address:

Wal-Mart’s Sustainable Supply Chain Strategies
Chris Kozak, Senior Director of Transportation, Wal-Mart

Monday, June 6, 2011, 8:15-9:15 am
Wal-Mart set a goal to cut some 20 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions from its supply chain by the end of 2015 — the equivalent of removing more than 3.8 million cars from the road for a year. To achieve that goal, Wal-Mart will be pressing its suppliers to rethink how they source, manufacture, and package and transport those goods. Chris Kozak, Wal-Mart’s Senior Director of Transportation, will provide insight on these new policy changes from Wal-Mart that could potentially impact your business and the cold chain industry at-large.

Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve commercial vehicle safety. And CSA2010 will impact the trucking industry like no other Department of Transportation/FMCSA initiative in history. This session will shed light on how CSA2010 could impact motor carriers’ insurance and business.

Are You Taking Advantage of Rail?

Herman Haksteen, CEO, Cyro-Trans

Monday, June 6, 2011, 11:15 am-12:00 pm
Temperature-controlled rail service is available throughout North America, yet only a very small percentage of rail shipments are food products in temperature controlled box cars.  Why isn’t rail being utilized more? In this session, participants will understand why supply chain professionals are uncertain of rail, how the rail supply chain works, and when rail works and when it doesn’t.

Bill Graham, Graham Corporate Communications

Managers use personnel supervision to manage systems. Leaders use personal communication to inspire people. This humorous and inspiring presentation will show you how to stop acting like a professional and start acting like a human being to better motivate your employees.

Building a case for the Value of Integration

Don Ratliff, Georgia Tech Integrated Food Chain Center
Jane Griffith, Sr. Director of Food Safety and Quality Assurance, Wawa

Tuesday, June 7, 2011, 9:45-11:00 am
Compliance with new food safety regulations is going to force an increase in data capture related to food products as they move through the food chain.  Cooperation between entities is essential in order for this to be done in a cost effective manner.  This will create a great opportunity to utilize this cooperation to provide economic benefit to more than offset the cost by improving supply chain performance, particularly as it relates to inventory management.  There is sufficient motivation for integration such as food safety, improving product quality, reducing waste among different entities within the food chain; however, an even bigger motivation for integration is the potential to increase the time product is available for sale (shelf-life) in the store and to improve replenishment planning by reducing variability and increasing predictability of shelf-life.  This presentation will focus on driving economic benefit through integration.
